What is the West Virginia Hope Scholarship?

The Hope Scholarship is West Virginia's Education Savings Account. The state deposits the public-school share of your child's education funding into an account you control, to spend on tuition and approved learning costs at a school like Score Academy Online.

West Virginia's Education Savings Account, now open to every family.

West Virginia enacted the Hope Scholarship in 2021, and the first students used it in the 2022-2023 school year. For 2026-2027 the program becomes fully universal: every child eligible to enroll in a West Virginia public school in grades K through 12 can apply, including students already in private school or homeschool. It is administered by the West Virginia State Treasurer's Office through the online Hope Scholarship portal.

More than 20,000 families applied for the 2026-2027 school year, after more than 15,000 students received full funding in 2025-2026. The Hope Scholarship is an alternative to full-time public school, and once approved, funds are paid on a quarterly basis.

Everything West Virginia families ask about the Hope Scholarship.

For the 2026-2027 school year, the Hope Scholarship is universal. Any student eligible to enroll in a West Virginia public school in grades K through 12 can apply, including students who are already in private school or homeschool. The student must be a West Virginia resident and under 21 years of age. The one condition that remains is that a student cannot be enrolled full time in a public school while receiving Hope Scholarship funds, since the program is an alternative to full-time public school.

The Hope Scholarship award for the 2026-2027 school year is $5,435.62 per student. It is a flat amount equal to 100% of the statewide average per-pupil state aid from the prior year, and it is the same for every K-12 student, with no grade-level or regional differences. The award is per child, so a family with more than one eligible student receives a separate award for each. The amount is set each year by the state and generally rises as per-pupil funding rises.

Yes. West Virginia law lists tuition and fees for nonpublic online or virtual learning programs as a qualifying expense, alongside private school tuition. Score Academy Online is a Cognia-accredited, NCAA-approved online private school and a participating school for the Hope Scholarship. West Virginia families can apply their Hope Scholarship award to Score Academy Online tuition through the state's online portal. All three Score Academy Online learning packages, Synchronous, Flex, and Asynchronous, accept Hope Scholarship funds.

Yes, timing matters. New student applications submitted between March 2 and June 15 receive 100% of the annual award. Applications submitted from June 16 to September 15 receive 75%, from September 16 to November 30 receive 50%, and from December 1 to February 28 receive 25%. To receive the full 2026-2027 award of $5,435.62, apply by June 15. Applications are submitted online at HopeScholarshipWV.gov.

For the 2026-2027 school year, West Virginia disburses Hope Scholarship funds on a quarterly basis into a parent-controlled account managed through the online Hope Scholarship portal run by the State Treasurer's Office. West Virginia does not use ClassWallet. Parents use the online portal to pay tuition to a participating school like Score Academy Online, or to buy other approved educational expenses. Unused balances roll forward to the next school year.

No. The Hope Scholarship is an alternative to full-time public school enrollment. A student cannot be enrolled full time in a West Virginia public school while receiving Hope Scholarship funds. A student can return to public school in a later year, but the two cannot be used at the same time. Hope Scholarship students may still receive certain individual services from a public school under state law.

Approved expenses include private and nonpublic online school tuition and fees, curriculum and instructional materials, tutoring services, educational therapy services, standardized testing fees (such as AP, SAT, and ACT), dual-credit and college-level courses, educational technology, required school uniforms, and vocational supplies. The Hope Scholarship Board maintains the full list of approved expenses, and funds must be used for educational purposes and cannot be withdrawn as cash.

Yes. Score Academy Online is a participating online private school for the West Virginia Hope Scholarship. Families can apply their Hope Scholarship award to Score Academy Online tuition through the state's online portal. Score Academy Online holds full Cognia accreditation and offers NCAA-approved coursework for students in grades K through 12. Contact our admissions team to confirm current enrollment details and get the participating-school information you will need for your Hope Scholarship account.

Unused West Virginia Hope Scholarship funds roll forward to the next school year and remain in your account as long as your child continues in the program. This lets families save funds for larger future costs such as AP exam fees, testing, or higher tuition in later grades. If a student exits the program, any remaining funds return to the state.

Score Academy Online admissions can run in parallel with your Hope Scholarship application, so your child can be enrolled and ready to begin classes around the time your award is approved. Families can also enroll and begin paying from other funds, then apply Hope Scholarship funds once approved. Participation renews each year through a Continuing Participation Confirmation, and can continue until the student graduates from high school or reaches age 21. Speak with our admissions team to map out the timing that fits your situation.
