Understanding ESAs

What is an Education Savings Account?

An ESA is a state-funded account that routes education dollars to families. Your child attends the accredited school that fits them, not the one assigned by zip code.

How ESAs work

The state deposits funds that would have gone to your local public school into a government-authorized account for your child. You spend them on approved expenses, including private school tuition, through a debit card or payment portal.

ESA funds can cover: private school tuition and fees, online learning programs, tutoring, curriculum and materials, and standardized testing fees. Some states also include therapy services for students with special needs. Unused funds roll over year to year.

How to access your ESA

  1. 1
Confirm eligibility Check your state's ESA program criteria. Most newer programs are open to all K–12 students regardless of income or prior school enrollment.
  2. 2
Apply through your state Submit an application through your state's ESA administrator during the open application window. Most programs open applications in spring for the following school year.
  3. 3
Choose your school Once approved, designate your chosen accredited school. The state pays tuition directly through its portal or payment system.
  4. 4
Funds are released Most states release funds at the start of each semester. Unused balances carry forward to the following year.
